Creating Marino Ridge

Marino Ridge is designed with you in mind: a luxurious homely retreat hotel which is at one with nature.

Geoff Richards is one of New Zealand’s most respected architects, and he’s created a serene building which nestles seamlessly into a natural amphitheater that looks over a picturesque bay and the ocean beyond.

All three guest suites have been designed with indoor and outdoor living areas, each enjoying a sublime choice of views west to the city, north to the Gulf Islands, or east and south to the Coromandel coast. On clear days, you can even see Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands 50 miles away.

The guests’ heated spa and 16m pool have uninterrupted ocean vistas. And landscaping allows for easy access to our private bush tracks which lead to coastal walks to Oneroa village and various beautiful beaches.

We chose the name Marino Ridge because it describes elements of your stay. In Maori, marino means calm, or still, usually alluding to waters inside an ocean reef. It also relates to the sea in Italian and other European languages. And ‘Ridge’ because of the site, built into a spur on a prominent ridge above our beach.

We selected a special location for Marino Ridge, one that’s drenched by the sun from sunrise to sunset all year round. And being in a natural amphitheatre, it receives gentle sea breezes to soften the heat of summer, and gets shelter from rougher prevailing winds. From its commanding vantage point, you can see fish and seabirds feeding in and outside the bay. And if you’re lucky, dolphins and orca too.
